Winner - Elrita Roos
Wow, what a honour, to participate in you annual competition!
I created this painting of my husband and our daughter on stretched canvas a while ago. The background was done with a clear and rustic brown varnish, sprayed with water while it was still wet. The reaction between the two mediums gave it the desired marble effect. The portrait was painted in oil.
My main goal with the piece was to reflect the emotions of love, protection and caring that exist in our family.
It still occupies a special place in our home.
Thank you
Elrita Roos
Runner Up - Jan Graham
"Brassed Off "
Thank you so much. This will definitely be used to buy new pencils, and just in time for Christmas.
My image was taken from a photograph snapped at the Durham Miners Gala. This is a yearly event that I have attended since being a child. It’s always a marvellous gathering where the old mining villages parade their banners with pride, followed by their amazing brass bands.
In this image I caught the reflections of Durham glistening in the sunshine and filling up the space on the rim of the tuba. The colourful uniforms and music make for a very atmospheric day that I have tried to capture.
The painting is made entirely from polychromos coloured pencils onto Strathmore smooth board. It took 6 weeks to complete this piece containing 45 hours work.
